Although many Americans feel that their country is on the wrong track, that does not stop foreigners from wanting to immigrate to the United States. For many around the world, the promise of the American dream is still worth pursuing, and hundreds of thousands of people apply for a US immigrant visa every year.

This list uses annual data from the US State Department’s Bureau of Foreign Affairs to identify the countries whose citizens receive the most immigrant visas in the United States.

The US immigration process is confusing at best, but it always starts with a visa. A visa, in terms of immigration, is basically a permit to enter the country, given to those who want to work and live in the United States. There are two types of visas: immigrant and nonimmigrant.

These visas are usually for temporary workers, but they also serve other purposes, such as basic travel for tourists from certain countries. Even when obtained for employment purposes, however, nonimmigrant visas expire and do not lead to a green card or citizenship.

Examples of nonimmigrant visa categories include: journalists, diplomatic agents, US foreign military personnel, athletes, and other special circumstances. The most popular and affordable H-1B visa is the nonimmigrant visa.

Alternatively, an immigrant visa can be work-based or family-based. The goal behind them is that they eventually become permanent residents of the United States, either through a green card or citizenship. A common example of an immigrant visa is the K-1 visa or “fiancée visa” for people who marry a US citizen.

Last year more than 285,000,000 US visas were issued. Here’s a look at how it’s spread around the world:

Mexican citizens received the most visas to immigrate to the United States permanently at 40,600. America’s neighbor, Canada, ranked 43rd, with only 1,464 visas issued. China and India also top the list, coming in at #2 and #7.

Interestingly, only one European country, Ukraine, made the top 25. In 2021, before the Russian invasion, Ukrainians received 3,019 visas. Politics, such as Afghanistan (#5) and Iran (#25).

Looking over the top 25, it is surprising that eight North Korean nationals were granted immigrant visas last year. In addition, there are several countries that only accept US immigrant visas, including two countries, Luxembourg and Timor-Leste.

About 15% of the US population is made up of immigrants, and the country has the largest immigrant population in the world at 50.6 million.

How Does The Stock Market Work?

Based on the number of visas issued each year, there is a federal cap of 700,000,000, and some countries have specific limits on the number of citizens they can accept, as set by the United States. Although the numbers vary greatly from year to year, they have not been close to the limits of the past ten years.

Here’s a look at US immigrant visas around the world. In fact, they were almost halved during the pandemic:

In general, whether for economic reasons, family reunification, or to escape danger, people still come to the United States.

Between 2016 and 2060, the share of the US population born in the US is expected to increase by 20%. At the same time, the share of the foreign-born population is expected to jump to 58%.

Markets detect (and understand) changes in productivity Since the 1960s, productivity has largely stagnated. This animation shows how the conversion goes to extremes.

Towards the end of 2021, it happened again. And in 2022 the yield curve looked steeper and steeper. So what does an inverted yield curve look like and what does it represent in economics?

The above chart by James Eagle shows the November 2021-2022 yield curve using Eurodollar futures – which is an indication of the direction of the yield curve.

In general, a yield curve is a linear table that predicts the interest rate on a loan of the same quality as the loan, but with different maturity dates.

Under normal economic conditions, investors will receive higher interest rates for holding bonds for longer, resulting in lower returns. This is because these long returns are at risk of depreciation or decline.

So when interest rates on long-term contracts fall below those on short-term contracts, they lead to variable returns.

One concern is that interest rates are volatile compared to large government securities such as US Treasuries that can measure the economy. For every economic cycle since the 1960s, the recession has occurred in the previous year, except for one in the mid-1960s.

This is because a fall in productivity has a major impact on the financial markets. If the market expects that the economy is in bad shape and that long-term interest rates will fall, investors will buy long bonds.

The euro should not be confused with the euro, the currency of the European Union. Instead, the US dollars are in time deposits

The video above shows Eurodollar futures, which allow banks and companies to get today’s interest rate on the USD currency they plan to lend or borrow the next day. In short, future returns can tell us how banks and companies around the world feel about interest rates – and the strength of the economy.

As the examples above show, the return on the March 2023 Eurodollar futures contract continued to rise throughout the year – from 1.3% to 5.0% in November.

At the same time, March 2024 Eurodollar rates started above their 2023 counterparts, but eventually caught up.

And recently, the December 2022 Eurodollar income return in November was significantly higher than the 2024 return. This not only indicates that investors are pessimistic, it ‘indicates that the market expects interest rates to fall in 2024 and that inflation is falling.

“I think the market is growing ahead of itself in terms of interest rates in the banks. Central banks are still talking about keeping interest rates at a high level for a long time,” he said.

As 2023 rolls around, investors will be watching closely to see if the volatile returns hold up as the economy is in recession and the broader impact these results will have.
