Whether you’re a local fixture or a new business startup, your Google Business Profile makes it easy for consumers to discover, learn about, and contact your business online. These are the basic advantages of a Google My Business account, and if that’s not enough to convince you, consider the disadvantages of not having an account.
You risk losing customers. Without a Google My Business account, you have no control over the information displayed on your business profile, and according to a BrightLocal survey, 68% of consumers would stop using a local business after finding incorrect information online.

It should be clear by now that creating a Google My Business account and verifying ownership of your business is essential if you want to provide accurate information, respond to reviews, attract customers, and rank higher in local searches—even on the first page.
However, as mentioned earlier, the process is not super simple. It includes two different Google platforms and three different Google accounts, all with similar names, some of which you probably already have. So to put you on the right footing, let’s iron out the terminology first.

Google Account: This is a free account you create on Google, which gives you access to Google Docs, Google Drive, Google Photos, Gmail, etc. Many people call it their “Gmail account”, but Gmail is only one of its functions; you can actually use any email to set up a Google account. In this post, I’ll use the term “standard Google Account” to refer to this type of account, just to avoid confusion. Most business owners already have two standard Google Accounts – one for personal use and one for work.
Business Profile: This is your free Google business listing that appears on Google Maps, local Google search results, and the information panel on the right side of Google Search.
Google My Business Account: This is a free account that you create that gives you a dashboard to manage and improve your business profile.
Now that you have the proper terminology in place, let’s put the pieces together to form a complete picture of the process.

The way you do this is through your Google My Business account, which you sign into with your standard Google account.
Now, with the foundation in place, you’re armed and ready to claim and verify your business on Google. The steps below are written in a linear fashion, and in some cases you will have to jump down a ladder. But I would still encourage you to read them all carefully to avoid obstacles or creating duplicate accounts.
This is the default Google account we described in the terminology section above. If you already have one (make sure it’s not your personal Google Account), skip to step #2. If you don’t have a Google Account for your business, follow the steps below.
Your business profile is the official term for your business listing on Google. As mentioned above, Google Business profiles are separate from Google My Business accounts. A business profile can exist independently, without a Google My Business account. The problem with this is that the business owner has no control over the information in that business profile until they download it, which is done through Google My Business. Bottom line: Once you’ve set up your Google My Business account, you need to make sure you have a claimable business profile.

If you know you’ve already created a business profile, skip to step #4. If you haven’t created one or are unsure, follow the steps below.
Note: Even if you haven’t created one, there’s a good chance your business profile already exists. That’s because a business profile is simply a location on Google Maps that any person or computer can add. To check if you need to create a business profile, follow these steps:
1. Go to Google.com/maps. 2. Search for your company name. 3. If your company name is filled in the drop-down menu with an address next to it, it means that your company profile already exists. Great! You can skip to step #4.
If your business name isn’t filled with an address, select it and you’ll see something like this:

5. Enter the requested information. Note that you have the option to request a company within the same window. Since you don’t have a Google My Business account yet, skip to step #3. If you already have a Google My Business account, you can follow the instructions and you’ll end up at step #5 – see where you are!
The way you can claim your business profile on Google is through a Google My Business account. Assuming you have a standard Google account (see step #1), here’s how to sign up for a Google My Business account.
1. Make sure you’re signed in to the default Google Account for your business (and not the default Google Account for your personal life). 2. Go to google.com/business. 3. Select “Manage Now.”
When you link this account to your business profile (the last step in this post), more fields will open up on your dashboard so you can provide even more information about your business. This information is critical to optimizing your business for local SEO and attracting more customers through your free listing.

This is where we start putting the pieces together. Unfortunately, creating a Google My Business account (from step 3) does not automatically link it to your business profile (from step 2). You must ask Google to link them, and you will do this by confirming ownership of your work. To do this, start by finding your business profile on Google Maps or Google Search and request it. You can do this in one of two ways:
1. Go to google.com and search for your business name and location. If your business profile appears on the right, you’ll find “Own this business?” option and select it.
2. From there, you’ll be taken to a screen that says “Manage this business so you can respond to reviews, update information, and more.”
3. Click “Manage Now” and follow the instructions to claim your business. Again, make sure you’re signed in with a default Google Account that’s used for your work and not your personal life, as noted in step #1.
