But to properly optimize your business profile, you need access to it, and to access it, you need to verify with Google that you’re the right owner.

Whether you’re a local business owner or just starting a business, your Google Business Profile makes it easy for users to find, learn about, and contact your business online. If these are the main benefits of a Google My Business account and that’s not enough to convince you, consider the disadvantages of not having one.

You risk losing customers. Without a Google My Business account, you have no control over the information displayed on your business profile, and according to a BrightLocal study, 68% of consumers stop using a local business after finding inaccurate information online.

You risk a poor reputation. Without a Google My Business account, you won’t be able to respond to your Google reviews, which is a required section of your business profile. And with reviews being both a Google ranking factor and the first influence on consumer purchase, managing them is imperative.

However, as mentioned before, the process is not very easy. This includes two different Google platforms and three different Google Accounts, all with the same names, some of which you may already have. So, to make you clear, let’s iron out the terminology first.

Google My Business Account: This is a free account you create that gives you a control panel to manage and improve your business profile.

Now that you’ve defined the right terminology, put the pieces together to create a complete picture of the process.

Now, with the foundation laid, you are armed and ready to successfully claim and verify your business on Google. The steps described below are written in a linear fashion and in some cases, you may need to skip a step. But I still encourage you to read them carefully to avoid hitting snags or creating fake accounts.

This is the standard Google account we described in the terminology section above. If you already have one (make sure it’s not your personal Google account), skip to step #2. If you don’t have a Google account for your business, follow the steps below.

Your business profile is the official term for your business listing on Google. As mentioned above, Google Business profiles are separate from Google My Business accounts. A business profile stands alone without a Google My Business account. The problem with this is that the business owner has no control over the information in that business profile until they claim it, and that’s through Google My Business. Bottom line: After you set up your Google My Business account you need to make sure you have a business profile to claim.

If you know you’ve already created a business profile, skip to step #4. If you haven’t created one or aren’t sure, follow the steps below.

Note: Even if you didn’t create it yourself, your business profile likely already exists. Because a business profile is a location on Google Maps where any person or computer can be added. So, to check and see if you want to create a business profile, follow these steps:

1. Go to Google.com/maps. 2. Search for your business name. 3. If your business name in the drop-down list is populated with an address next to it, it means your business profile already exists. Excellent! You can skip to step #4.

If your business name isn’t populated with an address, select it and you’ll see something like this:

5. Provide the requested information. Note that you have the option to search for a business in the same window. Since you don’t have a Google My Business account yet, you’ll need to skip to step #3. If you already have a Google My Business account, you can follow the instructions and you’ll get to step #5 – see how you get on!

The means by which you claim your business profile on Google is through a Google My Business account. If you have a standard Google account (see step #1), here’s how to sign up for a Google My Business account.

1. Make sure you’re signed in to the standard Google account for your business (and not the standard Google account for your personal life). 2. Go to google.com/business. 3. Select “Manage Now”.

Once you link this account to your business profile (last step of this post), additional fields will open up on your dashboard so you can provide more information about your business. This information is critical to optimizing your business for local SEO and attracting more customers through your free listing.

This is where we start putting the pieces together. Unfortunately, creating a Google My Business account (from step #3) is not automatically linked to your business profile (from step #2). You tell Google to link them and it does this by verifying your business ownership. To do this, start by finding your business profile on Google Maps or Google Search and ask to claim it. You can do this in one of two ways:

1. Go to google.com and search for your business name and location. If your business profile appears on the right, “Own this business?” option and select it.

2. From there you will be taken to a screen that says “Manage this business so you can respond to comments, update information, and more.”

3. Click “Organize Now” and follow the instructions to search for your business. Once again, make sure you’re signed in with the standard Google account you use for your business and not your personal life, as suggested in step #1.

1. Go to Google.com/maps. 2. Enter your business name. 3. Click on your business profile, it will expand. 4. Then you will see “Claim this business” option.

Clicking on “Claim this business” will overlay the same screen you saw in the first method, but this time directly on the map.

4. Click “Manage Now” and follow the instructions. Again, make sure you’re signed in with the Google Account you created for your business mentioned in step #1.
