Facebook is still the largest social media platform in the world. But while it’s convenient to connect with friends or colleagues, it also contains more personal data than you might think. And if you don’t have the right privacy settings, a lot of your personal data can be exposed to the public.
While you can’t control the advertisers and other outside companies to whom Facebook chooses to sell your information, there are ways to make sure that other Facebook users can’t see your information unless you want them too.
Quick Tip: If you’re done with Facebook and don’t want anyone to see your profile anymore, try deactivating or deleting your account. This is a more extreme step, but still the best way to remove data from the site.

Social networks have given us more control over where posts are displayed and what personal data is used to serve ads. But these additional options also make managing Facebook privacy even more confusing.
How To View Private Profiles On Facebook
Answer: The first thing you need to do is find out how much information foreigners can see on Facebook. To do this, go to your profile page and click on the three dots in the lower right corner of your cover photo. In the drop-down menu that appears, click “View As”.
This will take you to a version of your Facebook page that looks similar to users who are not your friends. Certain information such as your name, current profile photo and cover photo will always be visible to strangers. But you can specify who sees other types of content. Try scrolling through your profile page in this view to see how many of your posts can be seen by people who aren’t your friends.
During Step 1, you may discover that you accidentally shared a post with everyone on Facebook. Every time you make a post, Facebook gives you the opportunity to quickly decide which audience to share it with.
To the left of the “Post” button you will see a box indicating who will be able to see certain content. Click the box to select an audience from the drop-down menu – the most common are “Just Me”, “Friends” and “Audience” (which includes anyone on or from Facebook). You can also share posts with people in your current city or create custom lists. It allows you to share, for example, baby photos only with family members.
How To Make Your Facebook Profile Private?
Any audience you choose for a particular post will be the default. So if you make a post “Public”, Facebook will make all your posts “Public” from then on. If you find you’ve accidentally made too many posts public, Facebook also has an option hidden in its settings to retroactively make old posts more private. Click the down arrow in the upper right corner of Facebook and select “Settings” from the drop-down menu. On the Settings screen, click “Privacy” in the left panel and select “Limit past posts” in the “Who can see my stuff?” section. Share.
Over the years, you’ve probably given dozens of apps permission to access your Facebook data to quickly log in or get your contact list. Facebook tracks all these apps and now offers the ability to restrict certain apps from accessing information.
On the Settings screen, select “Applications” from the left panel. You will get a box of all Facebook verified apps. Click on any app and you’ll see a detailed list of all the personal information you’ve shared with the app, from your date of birth to your photos and location. You can choose to stop sharing individual data points or remove all app connections to your Facebook account. You can also disable the app’s ability to send you Facebook notifications. This can prevent you from continuing to receive disturbing news about your aunt’s life.
Facebook made all user profiles searchable in 2013, making it easier for others to find you on the site. But users can still prevent Google and other search engines from listing their profile in search results.
How To Clean Up Your Public Facebook Profile!
On the Settings screen, select “Privacy” from the left panel and answer “No” to the last question listed: “Do you want search engines outside of Facebook to link to your profile?” On the same screen, you can also choose whether you want anyone to be able to send friend requests or only friends of friends.
Facebook tracks your internet browsing habits and uses this data to provide more personalized advertising. If you’re horrible, you can tell the company to stop. In the Settings menu, click “Ads” in the left panel. The first part deals with what Facebook calls “online interest-based advertising”. If you disable this setting, you’ll still see the same number of ads, but they won’t adjust to your web history outside of Facebook. All your actions on Facebook are still fair game for serving targeted ads.
Under that option is a setting to turn off ads that accompany your social actions. If this setting is on, Facebook uses your likes and shares to make ads in other people’s news feeds more attractive. So, if you like a Doritos page, this information may appear alongside a Doritos sponsored post in your friend’s feed without your knowledge. Select “none” in this section and Facebook will not use your likes in this way.
You can block specific users by selecting the “Block” option in the left panel of the Settings menu. You can block users directly, which means they can’t see your profile or add you as a friend. You can also block users from performing certain actions, such as sending event invites or app game invites (again, great for candy-addicted aunts). Note that there is also a separate block option for Facebook Messenger on this settings page.
Ways To Hide Facebook Friend List On Your Phone And Pc
Users can also add users to the “Shortlist” on this page. Anyone on the list will only be able to see the posts and information you share with your entire audience – and they won’t even know they’ve been put on this list. So, if you want your colleagues to see useful Facebook privacy articles and not messy party photos, try posting them on this list (and mark some posts “Public” if necessary). Facebook is set to make all your information public by default. But what if you want to keep your profile private and have more control over other Facebook users who aren’t yours?
