Sometimes Google seems to know everything. While this is great for finding an actor whose name you can’t remember, it’s a problem if your personal information is leaked online.

In the past, Google only removed your personal information from the Internet if you could prove that you were at risk. Now, even if you’re not in immediate danger of doxxing or identity theft, you can ask them to remove sensitive information.

For Google to take action, the information you want removed must fall into one of the following categories:

If they find a website holding this type of information, they won’t remove the website, but they will remove it from search results – from all search results or from searches that include your name.

Asking Google to delete your personal information does not mean that it will delete it. They may deny your request if they believe that personal information about you online does not meet their standards or is shared through a “public record,” such as a news release or government agency’s website.

Quick tip: You need to give Google the exact URLs of the sites where your information appears – they won’t search for you. If you’re looking for a service that finds and deletes personal information on your behalf, try DeleteMe.

1. Go to the Google Support page and click the blue Start Removal Request button.

2. Use the page that appears to choose what you want Google to do with your information and where it is located. The options you have to choose from are:

3. Select the category that your personal information belongs to. If you are trying to delete data from multiple fields, you will need to fill out this form multiple times.

4. Once you have selected all the options, a new form will appear asking for your full name, country and email address. You must also provide the exact URLs of the websites where your information appears, a link to the Google search you can use to find your information, and screenshots of the information everywhere it appears.

Depending on what you’re trying to remove, you may need to provide additional information, such as your bank account details.

Over the next few days, Google will review the request and ask if we need more information. Finally, you will receive an email explaining what Google is doing to remove your information or why it rejected your request.

If your claim is denied, you can resubmit it and additional materials to back up your case.
