How To Start A Virtual Assistant Business – I feel like I’ve been on my soapbox lately… and I guess I do because I’ve seen changes in the VA industry over the past year.

I’ve seen a lot of what I call “bad advice” given to new Virtual Assistants; I want to write an all-inclusive blog post!

That’s the good, the bad + the ugly to keep in mind when you start your VA business.

How To Become A Virtual Assistant & Make Money (step By Step)

Oh… some of these are actually taught by so-called experts in training + coaching programs and used in their marketing.

This will be one of those growing posts – as I find more bad advice I’ll add to the list.

I understand that taking the opportunity to learn something new, but you have to be honest with your customers. Let them know you’re willing to learn – don’t fake it.

Cheating means you are not really sure what you are doing. It’s like saying you know Infusionsoft, but you’ve never seen it.

Lack of confidence means you are skilled and know what you are doing, you just haven’t done enough to be sure. For example, you take a class to learn WordPress, but you don’t yet offer it as a service. Do you really want to fake it with your customers? You work in their business – their child.

Oh… and if you’re going to offer advanced services like social media marketing or tech tools, make sure you get the necessary training. This is not the same as providing administrative skills that you can learn OTJ.

Do you work for free? Your knowledge, skills + expertise are valuable and you should be paid for them. When you work for free, you don’t value the work you do or yourself. Not to mention, people who want free stuff can be nightmare customers.

I see a lot of people saying they work for free for testimonials, but you are still dedicating your time + knowledge. And … they are worth something, aren’t they? Yes they are!

Become A Va

Instead of working for free, offer discounts, special launches, quick sales, but don’t work for FREE.

No that’s not true. It’s not easy and not everyone can be a VA. Take the time to really understand what it takes to be successful.

Learn all you can about the days of your Virtual Assistant’s life cycle so you can make the right decision for you. Just know that it’s a lot of work when you start, but it’s worth the freedom and flexibility you get.

I’ve seen people follow this advice and end up posting for help with what to do next in a Facebook group and guess what? Customers who have just hired them are already in the group and have seen the post. Not a good way to start a relationship.

If you are looking to build a successful business and give your customers a first class experience, do yourself a favor and don’t take this bad advice.

Virtual Assistant Business Names To Get More Clients

You can definitely start a Virtual Assistant business BUT you need money. I’m not talking thousands of dollars here, you can earn $500 – $1,000. I know that sounds like a ton of money – especially if you don’t have it, but you don’t have to spend it all right away.

Create your own budget – do your research to find out how much everything will cost. It all varies depending on where you live and the type of service you provide.

I’m willing to bet that about 99% of all Virtual Assistants start with NO experience. I have never been a VA before nor have I ever been a business owner.

You don’t need experience as a Virtual Assistant to start a VA business. But… you must have some experience working directly with clients. If not, it will be a much more difficult journey.

Ways To Work Full Time While Managing Your Virtual Assistant Business Part Time

One of the worst I’ve seen in my opinion is the advice that if you’re confused or don’t know what to charge for an hour, start at $25.

I’m sorry, I really do have a problem with this and it can mess up my hair, but I don’t care because this is bad advice.

How can someone tell you that $25 is what you pay if you don’t know? How do they know??

(If you do… you may quickly go out of business or find you have to raise prices to survive).

Steps To Offer Virtual Assistant Services From Home

First of all, you need to know your base level because we all have different numbers that we need to achieve in order to be successful. The last thing you want to do is start a business and then struggle to make money.

There are customers who will pay you what you want or need. You just have to believe this!

My best analogy is that there are business coaches who make $100 an hour and there are business coaches who make $50,000 an hour and both have clients.

So … please don’t let anyone dictate how much you charge, because if someone said, “Susan, you should start at $25 an hour,” I’d be out of business. because it costs me an hour. is $50 an hour. minimum!

Take your time, do the exercises and figure out how much you need to keep the business going because $25 may not be enough. You might need $50 or $75. Remember, believe in what you are offering and believe in yourself, but please don’t get that bad advice in my opinion.
