But when you ask for or write a LinkedIn recommendation, it’s easy to get one.

But what if you never ask for a referral? What if someone isn’t asking you to upgrade your profile? What if you don’t know what to say?
How To Write A Linkedin Farewell Message
Don’t worry! I’ll show you how to ask for and write LinkedIn recommendations in a way that feels comfortable and easy.
If you’re not asking for or writing LinkedIn recommendations, you’re missing out on a great way to generate a lot of interest in your profile and help boost your personal brand.
One of social proof researcher Robert Cialdini’s six principles of persuasion. Cialdini describes social proof as our bias
“Use the behavior of others to determine appropriate behavior for ourselves, especially when we think of others as ourselves.”

It can be a car, television, service. You’ve probably gone out and read some reviews, right? These reviews probably influenced your decision on which product or service provider to work with, right?
Both of these provide great social proof for future customers! They can see how past clients and peers feel about the information I share and the value I bring to the table.
When it comes to LinkedIn recommendations, the more you join (because the number of people you recommend is also a form of social proof!).
The more you have, the more attractive your LinkedIn profile will be. So who should you ask for a recommendation?
How To Write A High Performing Summary For Your Linkedin Profile
You might think your network is small, or that asking for something like a recommendation is weird (we’ll get to that in a bit!).
The truth is, like anything else, asking for referrals is a bit of a numbers game. If we want to get the right amount of suggestions, we need to ask more people!
If you are writing a list of people, you can find 10-15 names.
Tip: It’s easy to remember who’s in your network. The good news is that you can download your entire LinkedIn contact list. Select LinkedIn > Settings & Privacy > Back Up Your Data > Connect. LinkedIn will send you a list of your first contacts. Now you can scroll down the list and find even more people to ask for offers you may have forgotten about!

If it’s been a while since you’ve talked to someone on your list, don’t break down the door by asking for an offer right away.
Instead, send them a message to check with them. Back and forth heat. Then be honest, polite and direct (and offer an answer too!).
If you’re feeling weird, awkward, or afraid to ask for a LinkedIn recommendation, you’re not alone! Asking others to say nice things about us is often out of our comfort zones.
The first step is to actually ask for an offer. As mentioned above, if you haven’t spoken to your connection in a while, you may want to warm up the relationship before asking.
Linkedin Message: How To Perfect It And Get More Replies?
Finally, if you’re asking for a quote, you’ll want to add 3 elements to your initial question:
Example of Asking for a LinkedIn Recommendation Hi [name], I’m glad to hear things are going well at [current company]! It was reconnected. I just wanted to give you a quick heads up in case you are up for it. Want me to write a LinkedIn testimonial about our time? I know this is a big question, so no pressure, you can say no. Anyway, I want to write you one (or help in some other way!). rich, [your name]
Notice how we ask for a suggestion, make it specific, give them a chance to say no, and then offer to respond (even if they don’t say yes).
Writing a prescription (so they said yes), so they felt the same way when they started writing it!
Free Linkedin Introduction Message Templates You Need To Use Today
The hardest part of writing anything is when you open a text editor and find yourself with a completely blank screen and a blinking cursor.
You can help them by giving them specific instructions and examples for communication. For example, you:
Content Example for a LinkedIn Recommendation Thank you [name] for writing me a recommendation! I am very grateful. I know starting from scratch is hard, so this might help. The role I’m targeting is focused on collaboration in the mobile SaaS space. Partner with a SaaS company to go back to [the company or project you worked for] and deliver results. Just wanted to share in case this helps/makes it easier.
By sharing this unique mission and the results that follow, we will guide the other person on the run and give them the results to include in their referral!
Superb Linkedin Summary Examples
Maybe your contact is worried about what to write, or maybe they’re incredibly busy. Either way, they may not have shared it with you and you’ll want this offer on your profile!
If you want people to take action, remove all barriers and make it as easy as possible for them.
Write the proposal, then send it to them, and you give them full permission to edit, revise, or change what you write.
For example, here’s a message I sent to the host of an event I was speaking at (I was hoping to gain attention and support for my speech):
Linkedin Summary Examples That Get Prospects Looking
If you have another example of how to send such a message, you can copy and paste it here:
An example of breaking barriers in your communication. I know that writing something like a proposal takes a lot of time. I really appreciate you wanting to do this, I want to keep it as small as possible. If it’s easy, I can write a draft proposal and send it to you. Then you can change anything about it. Let me know what you think!
Now we’ve made it as easy as possible for them to say yes, while at the same time taking full control of their proposals.
I’ll share templates below to get you started, but you should always try to customize them and make each LinkedIn offer unique.
Linkedin Prospecting Messages: How To Nail One [+ Templates]
LinkedIn Recommendation Writing Examples I worked for [your name] at [company] for X years. [Your Name] has a natural ability to develop partnerships with organizations that truly drive business growth. For example, we risk losing 15% of our numbers in Q4 [insert year]. [Your Name] finalized the prospect and eventually formed a partnership with [Company], bringing in $2 million in revenue over the next three months. At the end of the quarter, we were 5% ahead of the plan. I wholeheartedly recommend [your name] to anyone looking for an expert in the field of collaboration.
After reading it, you’ll know what this person focuses on, have examples of their work, and have a great recommendation from a colleague.
Once the offer is written and ready to publish, we need to know how to publish it on LinkedIn.
I always like to send these guides links to contacts so they don’t have to look them up themselves (again, makes it easier).
